MUSEUM OF SENSATION
A JOURNEY FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF ONESELF
Each and every one of us experience emotions from the day he was born, it comes naturally and doesn’t differentiate between age, gender or even social class. But, if experienced in an unhealthy way and not well understood it can cause major mental related problems that lasts for a long time. In fact, many researchers related mental health problems to the lack Emotional Intelligence. Daniel Goleman – Psychologist, Lecturer and science Journalist - says in his book Emotional Intelligence:
“IQ CONTRIBUTES ONLY 20 % TO LIFE SUCCESS - THE REST COMES FROM EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE”
Emotional Intelligence is the Individuals' ability to identify and mark their own and others' emotions, distinguish between different feelings and label them accordingly, use emotional knowledge to direct thought and actions, and change emotions to respond to changing environments.
He then also mentioned that there are 7 main emotions needed to provide this understanding of the self and they are:
• Happiness
• Anger
• Fear
• Sadness
• Surprise
• Disgust
• Love
So I started designing using these 7 basic emotions and using different Architectural elements to control how the person feels in the museum so at the end the target is for the visitor to go through the 4 following stages for each emotion in the museum:
• Perceive Emotion
• Integrate Emotion to Facilitate Thought
• Understand the emotion
• Promote Personal Growth
SITE ANALYSIS
The site I chose was FUSTAT AREA - MOGMA EL ADYAN in Egypt.
I chose this site because it’s very spiritual and has 3 religions in the same area. It is also a very strong attraction point with many heritage sites which helped me in the design process, in fact I started reflecting the site in my Project. To the right of the site there are the ruins of the Fustat City which was one of the most modern and developed cities at the time but its citizens had to burn it down by themselves to prevent the invaders from living in their own homes so I related this to the 2 emotions Anger and Sadness and placed them to the right where visitors will experience the Anger Emotion then the Sadness Emotion then will take the slope to the ruins of the city to fully understand the emotion, then will go back underground to the museum.
Then to the left in the site we have 3 religions and in psychology the 2 emotions related to religion is fear and happiness so I placed these emotions to the left. Visitors will visit the Fear emotion then Happiness Emotion in the museum underground then go aboveground to visit the outdoor exhibition. This movement will break the barrier between Underground and aboveground.
WHY UNDERGROUND ARCHITECTURE?
• Retreat from urban life
• Meditation as proved in the ancient Grotto it proved to provide the ability to connect with oneself and to reflect
• Constant cooling Temperature
• Limitation of Noise and vibration
• Reconnecting with Nature
